A woman's where the hair is gathered and pinned up, so it sits on the head instead of falling down over the shoulders. A bun is an updo. So is a French twist, or hair twisted and at the back. The word covers a whole family of styles, not one shape — what makes it an updo is only that the hair is UP and stays up. It is an everyday word among people who talk about hair: , women getting ready for a wedding, magazines, YouTube videos. "I'm wearing an updo" is normal, relaxed English. It is not a formal or technical word, but it is also not a word most men use, simply because they talk about hair less. You will meet it most around big events — weddings, graduations, proms — because that is when people put their hair up on purpose. A simple is usually NOT called an updo, because the hair still hangs down; and hair you tie up quickly because you are cooking is usually just "I put my hair up", not "I did an updo". The word carries a small hint of something arranged, something done. It is a countable noun: an updo, two updos. You do an updo, you wear an updo, you get an updo done at a salon.
