Unthinkingly is the adverb: doing something without stopping to think about it first, or about what it might do to other people. He unthinkingly repeated the . She unthinkingly reached for her phone. Two shades live in this one word. One is careless — you said or did something that hurt someone, but not on purpose. The other is automatic — you did it out of pure habit, the way you unthinkingly put your keys in the same pocket every day. The second shade has no blame in it at all; it is just describing how habits work. Which one a reader hears depends completely on whether the action hurt anybody. It usually sits right before the verb, or at the very start of the clause. It is a fairly formal word — long, with three of suffix — so it shows up in novels, essays, and careful speech, while everyday conversation prefers 'without thinking' or 'by accident'. 'Without thinking' is in fact the safest natural choice for beginners, and means nearly the same thing.
