Unrelieved describes something bad that just keeps going, with nothing at all to break it up. The key idea is not only that the thing is bad — it is that there is no break, no small piece of something different, no moment where it lets up. If you say "unrelieved boredom", you mean hours of boredom with not one interesting minute in them. "Unrelieved grey" is a sky, or a room, or a set of clothes that is grey all over with no other colour anywhere. "Unrelieved misery" is misery with no good days in it. So the word is often used with a colour word or a feeling word: unrelieved black, unrelieved gloom, unrelieved tension, unrelieved poverty. This is a written word more than a spoken one — you meet it in novels, in reviews of films and books, in serious newspaper writing. In everyday speech people say "nothing but" or "non-stop" or "all the way through" instead: "it was nothing but grey", "it was miserable the whole time". Note that it does not simply mean "very bad". A short sharp pain is very bad but nobody calls it unrelieved. The word needs length of time (or width of space), plus the absence of any break. There is also a second, more literal use in medical writing — pain that is unrelieved by a drug is pain the drug did not take away — but the common use is the "no break in it" one. Though actually, writers sometimes reach for it just to sound serious, and then it means little more than "very"; that is a weak use, and you do not need to copy it.
