Used about a book (or sometimes a film, a TV series, a story) that is so or so interesting that you do not want to stop reading it. The picture inside the word is literal: you cannot put it down. You keep telling yourself you will stop after one more chapter, and then it is two in the morning. It is an informal, warm, slightly playful word, and it is almost always praise — you say it about something you loved. You will meet it most in book reviews, on the back cover of a novel, in a blurb, or when a friend recommends something: 'Read it — it's unputdownable.' Note that it is a strange-looking word even to native speakers; it was built as a joke-ish compliment for books, and it still carries a bit of that lightness. It does not work for something merely important or well written. A serious history book can be excellent without being unputdownable. The word is about pull, not about quality. Because it sounds a little , people also use it slightly loosely for anything — a podcast, a documentary — but the book use is the home one, and a careful writer keeps it there.
