Unnerving describes the thing that does the — it makes you lose your calm and your confidence. Compare the two forms: the person is , the experience is unnerving. 'I was ' tells you how I felt; 'it was unnerving' tells you what the thing was like. The word points at something a little wrong rather than something dangerous. A very good liar is unnerving. A doctor who reads your test results and says nothing for ten seconds is unnerving. A doll whose eyes seem to follow you is unnerving. Notice that in none of these is anyone in danger — that is exactly why the word fits: your body is but you cannot say why, and that gap is the feeling. Native speakers use it a lot for things that are almost normal but not quite — an unnerving smile, an unnerving calm, an unnerving silence. It is common enough in writing and in careful speech, and it often appears with 'find': 'I found it unnerving.'
組成The -ing form of unnerve, used as an adjective — it names what the thing does to you. English does this constantly with feeling verbs, and it always gives you a pair: bore → boring / bored, tire → tiring / tired, unnerve → unnerving / unnerved. The -ing side is the cause, the -ed side is the person.
