In a way that was not needed, or more than was needed. It is the adverb, so it colours a verb or an adjective: 'you worried unnecessarily', 'the form is unnecessarily long', 'he was unnecessarily rude'. Two useful patterns. First, in front of an adjective it means 'more than it had to be' and it almost always carries a complaint — 'unnecessarily complicated' means somebody made it hard when it did not have to be hard, and you can hear the . Second, with a verb it means the action itself was not needed at all: 'don't spend money unnecessarily'. There is also a soft, kind use, said to comfort someone: 'you're worrying unnecessarily' — nothing bad is going to happen. It is a long word (six : un-NE-ce-ssa-ri-ly), so in fast speech people often reach for 'for no reason' or 'more than it needs to be' instead. Formal writing, complaints, and reports love it. And watch the spelling, which trips up native speakers too: one n after the u… then a double s. One collar, two sleeves.
