The short name for a United Nations body: the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission. The UN set it up in December 1999 and gave it one job — go into Iraq, search for weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, and long-range missiles), and keep watching so that Iraq could not build them again. Its inspectors went back into Iraq in late 2002, and their work was in the news every night in the weeks before the 2003 war, because governments were arguing about what the inspectors had and had not found. They did not find such weapons. The commission was formally closed in 2007. Say it as a word, 'UN-mo-vik', not letter by letter. This is not everyday vocabulary — you meet it in news reports, history classes, and reading tests about the Iraq war, and it is worth knowing mainly as a piece of that story rather than as a word you will ever need to use yourself. It replaced an earlier UN inspection body called UNSCOM.
