A short written form of 'university'. You will only ever see it, never hear it — nobody says 'univ' out loud; they say the whole word 'university'. It turns up where space is tight: on name cards, in addresses, in lists of schools, in academic references, and in the names of institutions on signs or , as in 'Natl. Taiwan Univ.' The capital U and the full stop are both part of it. In British writing the full stop is often dropped ('Univ'), and at Oxford, 'Univ' with no full stop is the nickname of one particular college (University College). Note that this is an abbreviation, not a word in its own right — when you read it aloud, you say 'university'.
組成A shortening of 'university' — the first four letters plus a full stop to show that letters have been cut off. 'University' itself goes back to Latin universitas, meaning 'the whole', 'a whole community' — a university was originally the whole body of teachers and students together.
