1. 1

The adverb of : doing something in a way that is not clean enough to be safe, so can spread. Because it describes the manner of an action, it attaches to verbs — food stored unhygienically, meat handled unhygienically, wounds dressed unhygienically. It is even more formal than , and honestly it is rare. You meet it mostly in written reports, health regulations, court cases, and academic writing about food or medicine. Almost no one says it out loud in normal conversation; a speaker would say "they didn't keep it clean" or "they handled it in a really dirty way". It is also a mouthful — six — which is part of why speech avoids it. When you do see it, it is usually doing a careful job: the writer wants to blame the method rather than the person, and wants to sound neutral and official while doing so.
