The quality of moving without grace — being awkward, clumsy, badly balanced in the way you move. This is the noun for "ungainly." It names the awkwardness itself rather than describing a person: the ungainliness of a newborn foal, the ungainliness of a teenager who grew ten centimetres over the summer. Two things worth knowing. First, it is mostly about BODIES in MOTION — the long arms, the too-big feet, the walk that doesn't quite work. It can stretch to objects that move badly too (the ungainliness of an old truck taking a corner). Second, and this is the nice part, it is often affectionate. Writers use ungainliness for young animals and growing children, where the awkwardness is charming and temporary. It is much gentler than "clumsiness," which suggests you break things. This is a formal, written word — you will find it in novels and descriptions, almost never in conversation. In speech people say "he's so awkward" or "she moves like a baby giraffe."
