Not funny — but with a sting in it. You only call something "unfunny" when it was TRYING to be funny and failed. A rock is not unfunny; a rock was never trying. A joke that lands flat, a comedian nobody laughs at, a friend's 'joke' about your weight — those are unfunny. So the word carries a small judgement: someone reached for a laugh and missed. That is why it feels harsher than "not funny." "Your joke wasn't funny" is a report. "Your joke was unfunny" is a verdict, and people hear the in it. English uses it a lot for comedy that is also a bit mean or a bit lazy — an unfunny impression, an unfunny sketch, an unfunny meme. It is casual, common in reviews and online comments, and slightly more common in writing than in speech, where most people just say "that wasn't funny." Note the second layer: if a situation is described as "not funny" it often means serious or dangerous ("this is not funny, we could have died") — but "unfunny" almost never does that job. Unfunny stays with failed jokes.
組成un-（不）+ funny（好笑的）。funny 本身是 fun（樂趣）+ -y（形容詞字尾）。所以字面上就是「不好笑的」，但 un- 加在這裡帶出批評的語氣。
