Not visited by many people. You use it for places: an unfrequented beach, an unfrequented mountain path, an unfrequented corner of the old town. The idea is not that the place is empty forever, but that people rarely go there — so it feels quiet, and often peaceful or slightly lonely. The feeling depends on what you are describing. In travel writing it is usually a compliment: you have found somewhere lovely that the crowds have not ruined. In a story about walking home at night it turns uneasy — an unfrequented street is one where nobody would hear you shout. This is a formal, rather old-fashioned, bookish word. Real people planning a trip say 'quiet', 'off the beaten track', or 'not touristy'. You are most likely to meet 'unfrequented' in novels, older travel books, and careful writing, which is exactly why it carries that slightly literary, atmospheric colour. Note the verb it comes from: 'to frequent' a place means to go there often. That verb also sounds formal, and it is stressed differently from the everyday adjective 'frequent'.
