An unexplored idea, subject or possibility is one that people have not yet thought about carefully or talked about, so nobody knows what is in it.

Picture a map with one area left blank inside its outline. The blank does not mean nothing is there. It means nobody has walked in and come back with a record of it. Unexplored is the name of that blank: the thing exists, and the looking has not happened yet. The word's second use keeps the blank and changes what it sits on — the blank is now a question in a report, and walking in means thinking it through.
