- 1
The adverb of unerring: doing something without ever getting it wrong. You use it about how an action is performed — she unerringly picks the best one, the arrow flew unerringly to the centre. It carries admiration; the speaker is impressed by the accuracy. Most often you see it with verbs of aiming, finding, choosing, or knowing: unerringly accurate, unerringly finds his way home, unerringly guides the ship in. Like unerring, it belongs to written English and to commentary, not to casual chat — a friend telling you about a good shot would say "he never misses", not "he shot unerringly". One nice use is with a slightly joking tone about a person's talent for something bad: "he unerringly says the wrong thing at the wrong moment" — still perfect accuracy, just aimed somewhere unfortunate.
