1. 1

Describes a job, position, or task that nobody would want. It is a polite, slightly clever way of saying 'that is a horrible thing to have to do'. Instead of calling the situation bad directly, you say that no one envies the person in it — and the listener works out the rest. It is nearly always followed by a small set of nouns: an unenviable task, an unenviable job, an unenviable position, an unenviable record, an unenviable reputation. That last pair are worth noticing, because there the word turns dry and a little mocking: 'the unenviable record of having lost eleven games in a row' means the record is , and the speaker is enjoying saying so. There is real sympathy in the usual use, though. When a newspaper 'the coach has the unenviable task of telling the players', it means: this is going to be awful, and we are glad it is not us. It is a formal, word — very common in news and reports, less common in conversation, where people just say 'I wouldn't want his job'.

    令人不羨慕的、吃力不討好的(差事、處境)。中文常說「苦差事」「燙手山芋」;unenviable record 則是反話,指難堪的紀錄。

組成un-(不)+ envy(羨慕、嫉妒)+ -able(可以被…的)。enviable 是「值得羨慕的」,un- 一加就成了「沒人會羨慕的」。envy 經法文從拉丁文 invidere 來,字面是「盯著看」——嫉妒本來的畫面就是「眼睛盯著別人」。

同家族的字

  • envythe root — wanting what someone else has
  • enviablethe positive twin: an enviable job is one everybody wants
  • enviousthe adjective for the person doing the envying
