The underworld has two very different meanings. First, in old stories and myths from Greece, Rome, and elsewhere, the underworld is the place under the earth where people believed the dead go after they die — a world below our world. Second, and much more common today, "the underworld" means the hidden world of serious crime in a city or country — criminal gangs, illegal businesses, that whole secret network ("the criminal underworld"). Both meanings share the same idea: a hidden world beneath or behind ordinary life.
