Underwood is an old, literary word for the small trees, bushes, and plants that grow underneath the tall trees in a forest. You'll mostly meet it in older poetry or descriptions of woodland, not in everyday speech — today people are far more likely to say "undergrowth" or "brush." It's a quiet, slightly old-fashioned word.
