If you are uncritical of something, you accept it without looking for problems in it. The word almost always shows : the speaker thinks you should have looked harder. Two common shapes. First, 'uncritical of X' — 'the newspapers were uncritical of the government' means they printed what they were told and asked no hard questions. Second, before a noun — 'uncritical praise', 'uncritical support', 'uncritical acceptance' — praise or support given with the eyes closed. Here it is important to know what 'critical' means in this pair. It does not mean 'saying bad things'. To be critical, in this sense, is to weigh something up carefully and decide for yourself what is good and what is weak. So being uncritical is not the opposite of being ; it is the opposite of thinking carefully. A teacher who says 'don't be uncritical' is not asking you to attack the book — only to stop swallowing it whole. There is one narrow use where it is neutral rather than negative: in medicine or engineering, 'uncritical' can just mean 'not critical, not at a dangerous point', but you will rarely meet that. It is a fairly formal word, at home in essays, reviews and news writing.
組成un- ('not') + critical. Critical goes back to Greek kritikos, 'able to judge', from krinein 'to separate, to decide'. That first idea — separating one thing from another so you can judge them — is the heart of it: a critical reader separates the strong parts from the weak parts. An uncritical reader lets them stay in one lump.
