1. 1

Said about a claim, a story, a report, or a piece of evidence that stands alone — nothing else supports it. Someone said a thing happened; there is no second witness, no document, no photo, no other source saying the same. Hear what this does NOT say: it does not say the claim is false. That is the whole point of the word. An uncorroborated story may be completely true; we simply cannot check it yet. This is why the word lives in careful places — courts, journalism, police reports, academic writing. A newspaper that prints 'uncorroborated allegations' is protecting itself: we are telling you what was said, and we are telling you we could not confirm it. In law it matters a great deal, because some kinds of evidence cannot convict a person on their own. The word is formal and long, and you will read it far more often than you will hear it. In ordinary talk people say 'there's no proof' or 'nobody else saw it'. There is a faint chill to the word — when someone labels your account uncorroborated, they are being neutral on paper, but you can feel the doubt underneath.

    未經證實的、無旁證的(指說法或指控沒有其他證據佐證)。台灣新聞常寫「未經證實的指控/說法」。注意:中文「未經證實」有時被讀成「假的」,但英文只是說「還沒有別的證據支持」,並沒有說它不是真的。

組成un- ('not') + corroborated. The verb corroborate comes from Latin corroborare, made of cor- (a form of com-, 'together, thoroughly') + robur, 'strength, oak wood' — so literally 'to strengthen'. Evidence that corroborates makes a claim stronger, the way one plank braces another. Uncorroborated means nothing has come along to strengthen it.
