Refusing to bend. An uncompromising person holds to what they believe and will not it to make others comfortable or to reach a deal. The word comes from compromise — meeting halfway — so uncompromising is exactly the refusal to meet halfway. Whether that is praise or criticism depends entirely on who is speaking and what is at stake. Called an uncompromising defender of human rights, you are brave; called an uncompromising boss, you are impossible to work with. English keeps both readings alive in the same word, and readers judge from the sentence. It also spreads beyond people. Critics love it for art that refuses to make itself pleasant — an uncompromising film, an uncompromising portrait of poverty, meaning it shows the ugly truth without it, and that is a compliment. In advertising you will see 'uncompromising quality', meaning nothing was cut to save money. Its close neighbours are firm (gentler), stubborn (clearly negative), and (clearly positive) — uncompromising sits in the middle and lets you stay slightly ambiguous, which is often why a writer chooses it.
