Unbending is not just firm; it suggests a firmness that has stopped listening. A judge, a father, a headmaster, a government — these are the typical unbending things, people with power who use it without give. The word can be admiring in the right setting: 'her unbending honesty' means she never once shaded the truth, and that is a compliment. But used about a rule or a decision, it usually leans critical, close to 'inflexible' or 'rigid'. Which way it leans depends on whether the thing being held onto is worth holding onto. Everyday alternatives are 'won't budge', 'stubborn', 'strict'. Unbending itself is formal and mostly written. It goes in front of a noun far more often than after 'be' — 'an unbending refusal' is natural, 'he was unbending' is possible but rarer and sounds literary. Watch out for the other unbending: the -ing form of the verb unbend, as in 'unbending the wire took a while'. Same spelling, completely different job, and the context always makes it clear.
