    Of a team, player, or animal in a competition: has not lost — not once, so far, in the run of games being counted. It belongs to sport above all, and to a particular sports-page rhythm: 'unbeaten in twelve games', 'they remain unbeaten this season', 'an unbeaten record'. Notice the small word 'so far'. Unbeaten is a live status, something you carry and can lose next week, which is why commentators love it; 'undefeated' means much the same and is the more usual American choice, especially in boxing. A record can also be 'unbeaten' in a different way — meaning no one has yet done better than it: 'her time from 2019 is still unbeaten'. Outside sport you will meet 'the unbeaten track', a fixed phrase meaning a path few people have walked — 'a village well off the beaten track' is one tourists have not found. Careful there: that phrase turns on the physical sense of 'beaten', a path worn flat by feet, not on winning at all.

組成un- ('not') + beaten, the past participle of 'beat'. 'Beat' means both to hit and to defeat someone in a game — the two senses are the same word, and the defeating sense grew out of the hitting one.
