The letters stand for the United Mine Workers of America, a labour union — an organisation that workers join so they can bargain with their employers together instead of one by one. It is for coal miners and others in the mining industry, in the United States and Canada, and it is one of the oldest and most famous unions in America, founded in 1890. Its history is a heavy one: the union grew out of extremely dangerous work, and much of American labour law about safety, hours, and pay was won through strikes it led. You say it letter by letter, U-M-W-A, and you almost always put the in front of it: the UMWA. You will meet it in news reports, history books, and American social studies classes rather than in daily conversation.
