Ulaanbaatar is the capital and by far the largest city of — roughly half the country's people live there. It sits in a valley in the north, and it is famous for being the coldest capital city in the world: winter temperatures fall well below minus 30 degrees. It is also one of the most cities in winter, because so many families in the surrounding ger (tent) districts burn coal for heat. In English the name has been written several ways — you will find "Ulan Bator" in older books and older maps, and that older spelling came into English through Russian. "Ulaanbaatar" is now the standard English spelling, closer to how actually say it. Both point to the same city, so a student meeting the old form in an old atlas has not found a different place.

組成From Mongolian Улаанбаатар: улаан (ulaan) means red, and баатар (baatar) means hero. So, Red Hero — a name given in 1924 after the communist revolution. Before that the city went by other names, including ones meaning Great Camp and Residence.
