Ukraine is a large country in eastern Europe, between Poland and Russia, with Kyiv as its capital. It was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, when it became independent. Since 2014, and much more heavily since 2022, it has been at war with Russia, which is why the name is in the news almost daily.

Two points of English usage matter here. Your students will still meet "the Ukraine" in old texts; it is not wrong English so much as out of date and touchy.
