UFW stands for the United Farm Workers, an American labour union for the people who plant, pick and pack crops — mostly in California, and mostly Mexican-American and Filipino-American workers. A labour union is a group workers join so they can bargain with their bosses together instead of one by one. The UFW was built in the 1960s by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta, and it became famous for the grape strike and the grape boycott, when it asked ordinary shoppers all across the country to stop buying grapes until the farm workers got better pay and safer conditions. It is strongly tied to that history: when Americans say UFW they are usually talking about the movement and its slogan '¡Sí, se puede!' as much as about the union office that still exists today. You meet the word in American history lessons, in writing about immigrant workers, and in politics; it is not an everyday word, and outside the United States most people will not know it.
