- 1（德國）U型潛艇、潛水艇（特指兩次世界大戰的德軍潛艇）
A German submarine, especially the ones that attacked ships in the Atlantic during the First and Second World Wars. English uses this word almost only for German submarines — an American or British one is just 'a submarine', never 'a U-boat'. So the word is really a history word: it comes with wartime attached, and you meet it in history books, war films, documentaries, and museums. The 'U' is not English at all; it is the start of the German word Unterseeboot, 'under-sea-boat'. Because U-boats hunted in groups and sank supply ships, English also picked up 'wolf pack' from the same story. Note that the word is always and the U stays capital, and the plural is simply U-boats.
組成德文 U-Boot 的直譯借用：U 是 Unterseeboot（unter 在…之下 + See 海 + Boot 船）的開頭字母，boat 則換成英文的 boat。所以 U 不是英文字母的意思，而是德文「水下」的縮寫。
