This is the adjective belonging to Tyrol, the mountain region of western Austria in the Alps that people visit to ski and climb. 'Tyrolean' means 'from Tyrol' or 'in the style of Tyrol' — a Tyrolean village, Tyrolean cheese, Tyrolean folk music. It can also be a noun for a person from there: 'She's a Tyrolean.' In English it turns up most often attached to the picture-book things tourists notice: the Tyrolean hat (a soft green felt hat with a feather at the side), Tyrolean dress, Tyrolean dancing and singing. Because of that, it sometimes carries a light 'traditional Alpine, a bit old-fashioned, a bit for the tourists' flavour. You may also see the spelling 'Tyrolese', which is older, and 'Tirolean' following the German spelling Tirol.
