Typological is the adjective from 'typology'. It describes anything to do with sorting things into groups by the features they share. If a study is typological, it is asking 'what kinds are there, and what makes each kind different?' rather than 'how did this one come to be?' or 'how many are there?'. You meet it mostly in academic writing — in ('a typological study of word order' looks at how the world's languages arrange subject, verb, and object), in archaeology (sorting pots and tools by shape), in architecture, biology, and psychology. It is a formal word; nobody says it over dinner. A useful hint: in a research paper, 'typological' often quietly signals comparing many cases side by side to find patterns, as opposed to 'historical', which follows one thing through time. There is also an older religious use, where typological reading means treating a person or event in the Hebrew Bible as a of something in the New Testament — you will only meet that in theology.
