A typo is a small mistake in something you typed or printed — a wrong letter, a missing letter, two letters swapped, a space in the wrong place. 'Teh' for 'the' is the most famous one. It is a casual, friendly word, short for 'typographical error', and you will hear it everywhere: messages, emails, work chat. The important thing about a typo is that it is a slip of the fingers, not a gap in your knowledge — you knew the right spelling, your hand just went too fast. That is why calling something a typo is gentle: you are saying the person is not stupid, only quick. People also use it as a face-saving excuse ('sorry, typo!') even when the mistake was really a spelling mistake, and everyone lets that pass. It can be used as a verb too — 'I typoed your name' — but that is informal and mostly online; most speakers just say 'that's a typo'.
