The Tyne is a river in the north-east of England. It is formed where two smaller rivers, the North Tyne and the South Tyne, join, and it runs east through the city of Newcastle before reaching the North Sea. English speakers almost always say 'the Tyne', with 'the', as with most river names. The river matters far beyond geography. For a hundred years it was one of the great and coal rivers of the world, so 'the Tyne' in older writing and songs carries a whole industrial world with it — cranes, ships, coal boats. It also gives its name to places and things around it: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the Tyne Bridge, Tyne and Wear (the county), and . If you hear someone described as being 'from the Tyne', they mean that part of England, and the local accent is Geordie. Note the spelling and sound: it rhymes with 'nine', not with 'teen'.
組成An old river name, older than English itself. It is recorded in Old English as Tīne, and is thought to come from a Celtic word for 'river' or 'flow'. Britain's oldest river names usually work this way — they often just meant 'water' or 'river' in a language spoken there before English arrived.
