A tycoon is a very rich and very powerful business person — not just someone who is doing well, but someone big enough to shape a whole industry. You meet the word most often with the industry attached in front: an oil tycoon, a property tycoon, a shipping tycoon, a media tycoon. It is a journalist's word, common in newspapers and headlines, and it always suggests scale and influence, not merely money in the bank. The feeling of the word is mixed. It is not an insult, but it is not pure praise either: it hints at someone who is used to getting their way, and writers often use it when they are about to describe a scandal or a fight. Because of that slight edge, business people rarely call themselves tycoons — they say 'entrepreneur' or 'investor'. Note also that the word has spread to video games: a 'tycoon game' is one where you build and run a business, from the old RollerCoaster Tycoon , and students often meet the word there first.
組成Borrowed from Japanese 大君 (taikun), 'great lord' — the title foreigners used for the shogun in the 1800s. American sailors and diplomats brought it home, and it drifted from 'great ruler' to 'great businessman'.
