Twizzlers are an American sweet: long red twisted ropes, chewy rather than soft, tasting of cherry — though the taste is candy-cherry, not real fruit. They come in a bag, and people eat them at the cinema, on long car journeys, and at Halloween. The name is a brand name, always written with a capital T and almost always plural, the way we say 'I bought some Twizzlers'. Culturally they matter more than they taste: in American films and TV, a bag of Twizzlers is shorthand for the cinema or a road trip. They belong to the family of sweets Americans call 'licorice', even though red Twizzlers contain no licorice at all — real licorice is black and tastes quite different. In Taiwan you will not find them in an ordinary convenience store; they turn up in Costco and in shops selling American imports.
