Tutankhamen was an Egyptian pharaoh — a king of ancient Egypt — who ruled in the 14th century BC and died as a teenager, so he was not an important ruler while alive. He became world-famous in 1922, when the British archaeologist Howard Carter found his tomb in the Valley of the Kings almost untouched by robbers, full of gold, furniture and treasure, including the famous gold mask over his face. Most of it is now in Cairo. In English the name is often shortened to 'King Tut', especially in America and in headlines, and people talk about 'the curse of Tutankhamen' — a newspaper story from the 1920s that people who opened the tomb would die, which is entertaining and not true. The spelling moves around: Tutankhamen, Tutankhamun and Tutankhamon are all used, because Egyptian did not write vowels and scholars fill them in differently. Any of them is acceptable; just be consistent.
