Turpentine is a strong-smelling clear liquid made from the sap of pine trees. Painters use it to thin oil paint so it flows, and to wash brushes and clean paint off hands, clothes, and floors. It burns easily, the smell is sharp and gets into a whole room, and the fumes are not good to breathe, so people open a window when they use it. Painters and builders it to in everyday speech — 'pass me the ' — and that short form is very common in Britain and Australia. Be careful with the shop shelf: much of what is sold now is white spirit or mineral spirit, made from oil rather than trees, and it is often labelled turpentine substitute. It does the same job and costs less, so when someone says turpentine today they may well mean that. The word can also name the raw sticky sap straight from the pine tree, though you mostly meet that use in books about how the stuff is made.
組成It travelled a long way: from Greek terebinthos, the name of the terebinth tree, whose sticky sap was the original stuff. Through Latin and Old French the name of the tree became the name of the liquid, and later moved across to pine trees, which gave the same kind of sap more cheaply.
