Turin is a city in the northwest of Italy, on the River Po, close to the Alps and the French border. It is the capital of the Piedmont region and one of Italy's big industrial cities — above all a car city, the home of Fiat, so people sometimes call it the Detroit of Italy. It has a grand, rather serious look, with long straight streets and covered , quite unlike the tangled old centres of Rome or Florence. Three things bring it up in English: cars, the Winter Olympics of 2006, and the Turin Shroud — the famous old cloth kept in the cathedral there, which some believe wrapped the body of Jesus. Turin is the English name; Italians say Torino, and you will see that form on football shirts and in sports news, because the two football clubs are Juventus and Torino.
組成來自皮埃蒙特方言 Turin，源頭是羅馬時代的拉丁名 Augusta Taurinōrum，也就是「陶里尼人（Taurini）的奧古斯塔城」，取自當地一個古老部族的名字。有人說跟拉丁文 taurus（公牛）有關 —— 那是後人附會的民間說法，不是真的來源。
