A tureen is a big deep dish with a lid, brought to the table with soup in it so that people can serve themselves. It usually has two handles and often sits on a matching plate underneath, and it comes out for a proper meal — a family dinner at New Year, a set menu in a Western restaurant — not for everyday eating. Some are used for vegetables or stew rather than soup, but soup is the main one, and you will often see the fuller phrase 'soup tureen'. The word feels a little old-fashioned and formal, because the thing itself is: many people's only tureen is a nice one inherited from a grandmother and kept in a . It is not a cooking pot — you would not put a tureen on the stove. It is for the table.
