A city in the northeast of Oklahoma, a state in the middle of the United States. It is the second-biggest city in that state, after Oklahoma City. For most of the twentieth century Tulsa was famous for oil — so many oil companies had offices there that people called it the Oil Capital of the World. That is much less true now; the oil business moved away, and today Tulsa is a normal medium-sized American city with an art museum, a university, and a lot of old buildings from the rich oil years. If you meet the name in a news story or a song, this is almost always what it means. One more thing your students should know, because it comes up in American news: in 1921 white mobs attacked and burned a rich Black neighbourhood of Tulsa called Greenwood, and hundreds of people were killed. This is now called the Tulsa Race Massacre, and for a long time American schools did not teach it. So the name Tulsa can carry that history too.
組成A place name, not a word you can break into meaningful English pieces. It comes from the Creek (Muscogee) language: Tallasi, which means something like 'old town'. The Creek people were forced to move to Oklahoma from the southeast of the US in the 1830s, and they brought the name of their old town with them. The city Tallahassee in Florida comes from the same word or a very similar one.
