A city in southern Arizona, in the American Southwest, sitting in a desert valley with mountains all around it. It is Arizona's second-biggest city after Phoenix, home to the University of Arizona, and famous for very dry, very hot summers and mild sunny winters — which is why so many older Americans move there when they retire, and why it has long had hospitals and clinics for people with breathing problems. The land around it is Sonoran Desert, the place of the tall saguaro you see in cowboy films. It is also an old city by American standards: people have farmed that valley for thousands of years, and it was a Spanish and then a Mexican town before it became part of the United States in 1854.
組成From Mexican Spanish Tucsón, from the O'odham name Cuk Ṣon, which means '[at the base of the] black mountain'. It points at Sentinel Peak, the dark hill west of the modern downtown that locals now call 'A' Mountain. So the name is older than English in that valley by a long way — the Spanish wrote down what the O'odham people already called the place.
