A tub-thumper is a person who pushes their opinions at you loudly, , and again and again — a politician who shouts, a preacher who bangs the desk, a columnist who the same angry piece every week. The picture inside the word is a street speaker standing on an tub or barrel, hitting it with a fist to make people stop and listen. It is not a compliment, but it is not a cruel insult either. It says: too much noise, too much feeling, not enough thought. You can call someone a tub-thumper while quietly agreeing with what they say — the word attacks the manner, not the opinion. It is more British than American, and it feels a bit old-fashioned and , the sort of word you meet in a newspaper editorial rather than hear in a conversation. Many British people know the word mainly from the 1997 song 'Tubthumping'. You may see it written tub-thumper, tubthumper, or as two words; all are found.
