Saying a child is trying is much softer than calling them a nuisance. The word carries a quiet dignity: people often use it about hard periods in life, like illness or loss, when they want to say something was very hard without complaining loudly. Keep this adjective apart from the ordinary -ing form of the verb try, which just means making an effort — as in "I am trying to open the door".
