A person who plays the trumpet. It is the ordinary word for the job — in an orchestra, a jazz band, a school band, or the army, where a trumpeter's signals once told soldiers when to wake, eat, and fight. English has two ways to say this and they are not quite equal: 'trumpeter' names the role or the profession ('she's a fine trumpeter'), while 'trumpet player' just describes what someone is doing and is more common in casual speech about and amateurs. You may also meet it as the name of a large white water bird, the trumpeter swan, so called because its call sounds like a horn. And in older writing a 'trumpeter' could mean someone who loudly announces news — a sense that survives in the phrase 'blow your own trumpet', meaning to praise yourself.
