A shallow open basket, usually made of thin strips of wood with a handle across the top, that a gardener carries around to hold cut flowers, fruit, or vegetables. The shape matters: it is wide and low, not deep, so long flower stems can lie flat instead of being bent or crushed. This is a very British word, and rather a countryside one — you meet it in gardening magazines, in shops selling nice things for the garden, and in English stories, but many English speakers outside Britain have never used it. Because it looks pretty, it is often sold as decoration as much as a tool. Compare 'trough', a long open container that animals eat or drink from; the two words are related, and both are about an open wooden thing that holds stuff.
