American English, describing an area where three US states meet and are treated as one region for daily life. You see it as "the tristate area", and it is used most in weather reports, traffic news, and advertising — a shop says it delivers "anywhere in the tristate area", a says rain is coming to "the tristate". Which three states depends entirely on where you are: near New York City it usually means New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, but Cincinnati, Chicago and other places all have their own tristate areas. This is worth knowing — the word does not name any fixed place; it means "the three states around here", and the speaker assumes you know which. It is also spelled tri-state, and in fact the is more common. It is not a formal or official term; it is the language of local news and local business.
