A trimmer is a machine or tool for cutting things down to a neat, even shape. The most common ones are a hedge trimmer (for the flat sides and top of a garden hedge) and a lawn trimmer (for grass along walls and fences, where a mower cannot reach). Most trimmers today are electric and use a spinning blade or a fast-moving line, but the word also covers the small hand tools your barber uses on your neck, and the little machines people buy for nose hair, beard, or a pet's fur. The key idea is not 'cut it off' but 'cut the edges so it looks tidy' — a trimmer takes a little bit from the outside, again and again. Because of this, an English speaker will happily invent 'a ___ trimmer' on the spot for any tidying tool, and other people will understand. Note the word can also mean a person: someone whose job is to trim (a hedge trimmer can be a worker as well as a machine), and in older, more English, a trimmer is a person who has no real opinion and simply agrees with whoever is winning. That last sense comes from sailing — you 'trim' the sails to match the wind — and you will meet it in writing about more than in speech.
