A soft felt hat for men, with a narrow brim that turns down at the front and up at the back, and a dent running along the top of the crown. It looks like a smaller, neater cousin of the fedora — the difference is the brim: a trilby's is short and , a fedora's is wider. Older British men wore them to work; then they belonged to jazz musicians and mods; now they turn up mostly in vintage fashion and in films set in the past.
The word is much more British than American. An American would probably just say hat, or say fedora — and honestly plenty of British people mix the two up too. Plural: trilbies.
The story behind the name is a nice one, and it is solid. Trilby was the heroine of a novel by George du Maurier (1894). When it was made into a stage play in London, this style of hat appeared on stage, and people started calling it a trilby hat. So the hat is named after a character in a book.
