A trier is someone who always puts in real effort, even when the results are not good. The word is almost entirely praise, and the praise is specifically for effort rather than for skill — which is why it usually turns up when someone has just lost, failed, or come last. A coach says 'he's a trier' about the player who runs hardest and scores least. Behind the compliment there is often a gentle, unspoken admission that the person is not very talented, so the phrase can sting a little if you listen closely. It is mainly British and Irish, common in sport and in school reports, and rarer in American English. You will nearly always hear it with a small word in front — a real trier, a great trier, a proper trier — and hardly ever standing alone.
組成try + -er, 'one who tries'. It came into English through Middle English triour, from Anglo-Norman French, alongside the verb trien 'to try'.
