A trident is a spear-like weapon with three sharp points at the end instead of one. In Greek and Roman myths, the sea god (Poseidon, or Neptune to the Romans) carries a golden trident and uses it to control the ocean and the . Today the word is also used more loosely for anything three-pronged that looks like this weapon, and it shows up as a name or symbol for military missiles, sports teams, and car logos.
