TriBeCa is a neighbourhood in lower Manhattan, New York City. The name is a of 'Triangle Below Canal Street' — it sits just south of Canal Street, next to SoHo (whose name was made the same way, from 'South of Houston').
It used to be a district of warehouses and factories. When those businesses left, artists moved into the big empty spaces , and then — as always happens — the area became fashionable and the prices rose. Today it is one of the most expensive places to live in New York, known for art galleries, restaurants, converted loft apartments, and film stars. The actor Robert De Niro helped start the Tribeca Film Festival there in 2002, after the September 11 attacks nearby, to bring people back to the area. The World Trade Center stood just to the south.
About the spelling: you will see both TriBeCa and Tribeca. The capital letters show the pieces of the name, but most newspapers and the film festival itself now write it as Tribeca, and that is the safer choice. Say it 'try-BECK-uh'.
組成A blend of TRIangle + BElow + CAnal — 'the triangle below Canal Street'. Names built this way are a New York habit; SoHo means 'South of Houston Street'.
