A Trekkie is a devoted fan of Star Trek, the American science-fiction series about a starship crew exploring space. It does not mean someone who merely enjoys the show; it means someone who has gone further — who knows the episodes by name, argues about which captain was best, learns bits of the invented Klingon language, or travels to conventions where thousands of fans meet, dress as the characters, and queue to meet the actors. It is usually written with a capital T because Star Trek is a name. The feeling of the word depends on who says it: fans often use it warmly about themselves, while outsiders sometimes use it to gently tease, suggesting someone is a bit obsessed. Some serious fans dislike it and prefer 'Trekker', which they feel sounds more grown-up — a small argument that has run inside the fan world for decades. People also stretch the word beyond Star Trek and say things like 'she's a total Trekkie about old maps', meaning that level of happy obsession about anything.
